How to keep Employees hydrated + office water solutions to help.

Need to improve productivity? Think Water.

Did you know that being as little as 3% dehydrated can impact productivity by up to 50%? Adding to the problem, many people are dehydrated without even knowing it. A recent study found that 7 out of 10 employees start their work day dehydrated. Considering dehydration has been shown to impact energy levels, impair cognitive function AND impact immunity, finding ways to encourage employees to stay hydrated should be a goal for employers.

So how can you help encourage employees to drink more water?
Here are a few tips:

1. Provide water in a variety of areas throughout the office to improve accessibility
As the saying goes, ‘out of sight, out of mind.’ Increasing the number of water refill stations in the office will help keep hydration top of mind. Office water solutions should be easy and accessible. Don’t forget to supply water in your foyer or lobby – starting the day with water in hand will help set the stage for the day.

2. Invest in a water filtration systemroom with pendant lamps and rectangular dining set
Did you know that 30% of Canadian tap water exceeds the national safety guideline for lead? Implementing a water filtration solution not only impacts the safety of your office water but also the taste. Better tasting water = more water consumption.

3. Provide a variety of water options
Chill, sparkling or still? These options don’t need to only be for your next team lunch at a restaurant. Provide your team with the beverages that they enjoy and options to keep them interested- sparkling water is one of the fastest growing non-alcoholic beverages!

4. Educate your team!
Most people don’t know how much water they should really be drinking in a day. person holding clear drinking glass

They’ve probably heard of the eight glasses per day rule, but the problem is this doesn’t take into account the size of the person. Because about 60-70% of the human body is made up of water, it makes sense that a person’s weight should factor into the equation when thinking about how to properly hydrate. The recommended daily water intake is half of your body weight (in pounds), in ounces, per day. For example, if you weigh 200lb, you should aim to drink 100 oz of water every day. This works out to 12.5 cups.
