Taking a break is good for business

The work culture today often encourages working 24/7 to get the job done, which can make it difficult for employees to feel good about or encouraged to take a break. Since no one can go, go, go all day every day without the inevitable burnout looming around the corner, this mentality is actually doing more harm than good when it comes to employee productivity. “Coffee could be a great way to bring your brain to focus on the task at hand. A study conducted in 2010 concluded that employees who take regular coffee breaks are more efficient and productive during work. A dose of caffeine can keep you alert, reduce stress, and help you stay active.” (Science of taking breaks at work- Mind Café)

With Neshu and all of the premium beverage solutions provided by EVS, we are working with clients to change this perspective on breaks and set up inviting break spaces. Having designated break spaces encourages people to pause, come together, collaborate and give themselves those much-needed breaks throughout the day! person holding white ceramic mug with brown liquid

Still need some convincing?

An article from Inc.com took a very interesting perspective on breaks – they’ve boiled it down to simple belief – ‘If your coworkers think you look lazy, then you’re probably doing it right.’ At first this sounds counterproductive, but just think of the adage ‘Work smarter, not harder’ and it starts to make more sense.

Working isn’t all about keeping your head down and plowing through work until you physically can’t anymore. An interesting ‘formula for success’ when it comes to breaks is 52 minutes of work followed by a 17-minute break (Inc.com). Now this may sound very specific, but the human-brain naturally works in bursts of high activity, followed by mental fatigue. While you can, and often have to push through that fatigue, it’s optimal for productivity to take that break when your brain tells you to.
